Stinging Nettles…. A love Story

My first experience with herbalism came from a Facebook group, led my who later became my herbal mentor. That FB group eventually led to me enrolling in her professional herbalist certification course. Anywho, she led what I’ll call a 7 day herbal challenge, where you drink 32oz of different herbal infusion (don’t you dare call it tea) daily. During this challenge is where I found what has become my “favorite herb” Stinging Nettle!!!
I had no idea, the journey I was about to begin. I’ll write about each herb at a later time. This post is all about Nettles! I heard of this herbs antihistamine qualities, which as an allergy sufferer I was amazed how a simple infusion could do what my allergy pills, nasal inhalers, and allergy shots couldn’t! Stinging Nettle is also used to treat Asthma, Gout, UTI, Heavy menstrual bleeding, enlarged prostate, lower blood pressure, and aids in blood sugar control. Stinging Nettle is considered a “tonic” herb (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbal_tonic) and highly nutritive packed with Vitamins (A,C,K, & several B (not b12) vitamin), Minerals (Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, & Sodium). All of the essential amino acids, many of these nutrients act as antioxidants within the body. Whew that was a mouthful!
Check this, stinging Nettle is also versatile, if you’re lucky enough (and know how to handle) to get your hands on fresh Nettle check out Pinterest for some inspiration (https://pin.it/pibxatv3wp7h7q). Even if you can’t get it fresh or worry about taming the “sting”, I’ve been known to add dried Nettle (https://www.yamayasgift.com/store/p15/Stinging_Nettles.html#/) into soups and stews ESPECIALLY if I’m sick or making for a sick person. If you prefer not to taste your herbs at all (I’ve heard of weirdos like that), Nettle capsules (https://www.yamayasgift.com/store/p98/Stinging_Nettle_Capsules.html#/ ) will work just fine. These are just my reasons Stinging Nettle is my favorite herb. I hope you decide to incorporate this versatile herb into your herbal regimen.
